Monitoring a scanner during local disasters or emergencies can provide a wealth of information.Public service agencies such as Police Departments , Sheriff's Offices,Fire departments, EMS and other's use codes for brevity purposes.Here is the nationally recognized "10 code" list,many are rarely or never heard.The ones with the * are the ones used most often.
