Generic drugs are "copies" of brand-name drugs that are identical in safety, dosage, strength, quality, performance, and intended use. Generic drugs go through the same FDA testing and approval process as the brand name drugs. Generic drugs have the benefits and risks as name brand drugs. They do not usually cost as much as name brand drugs but that should not be equated with poor quality. They also do not look like the name brand drugs. That is because trademark laws in the US apply to drugs and so the generic drugs must change the appearance of the drug, either color, size, shape or multiple factors. Sometimes it can take years for other companies to develop a generic equivalent for a particular drug, so every drug does NOT have a generic equivalent.

If you are prescribed a medication, it would benefit you to ask your physician if a generic equivalent of the drug exists and could be used. It is very likely that a generic equivalent will save you some coin and those dollars could then go where they all seem to go – into more preps.

Over time I have put together a list of common drugs and there generic equivalent names. Use it as you see fit. The idea is that it can be printed out and kept with your med. supplies and kits as a simple reference. While I was typing it in for this article, I left some spaces at the bottom to add your own entries. They’ll be out of alphabetical order, but they will handy.
