*Boot Jack*
Here's a good shop project for you and your kids.
Everybody in my family has always had a boot jack since back long before I can remember. They are simple to build and will last forever.
Seeing the pictures is pretty self explanitory on how they are built and work.
This one has been around forever and has 2 nails holding the block on the bottom. It has a small screw eye so it can be hung up when not in use.
